Co-designing the Bolzano Makerspace and Pop-up Shop
With the first of four events we started the new project: Make yourself.. by MODE UNCUT.
On Monday the 28th of November, a co-design session at Unibz, in Bolzano was the starting point for the upcoming 1-week pop-up shop event (12. – 17.December). Everyone was invited to co-design the themes of the event, depending on their interests, skills and visions.
With 12+ participants (students, teachers, volunteer migrant support workers, migrants and refugees) we began the session with a short blind-drawing introduction round including portraits of the participants and their favourite garment.
This was followed by two short presentations by the facilitators Prof. Alastair Fuad-Luke (make-yourself-workshop-281126-afl-v1-0) and Anja-Lisa Hirscher (download presentation), focusing on what is a makerspace(?), and showing some examples of previous workshops run in Helsinki, Finland and Dietzenheim near Ulm, Germany.
Further on, we brainstormed the individual skills of the participants and themes or foci they wished to see, attend or facilitate in the makerspace.
The ideas were wide-ranging. For example a scarf-hat “Harf” or “Scat” demonstrated by Pezhwak; combining socks with mittens or traveling socks; inserting a secret pocket in our clothing for money; the idea of creating a collective piece of work to which every participant can add to, when visiting the makerspace; and more…
One participant, Karl, also brought along aluminium wire to experiment with possible Christmas decorative products or fashion accessories.
Based on these discussions, we clustered the ideas into six themes which we then worked on in more detail in smaller teams:
Based on these themes, we have created a weekly schedule including the necessary skills, people, materials and equipment required to execute the practicalities. Building on these themes, each day will be dedicated to a different topic, plus a final exhibition on Saturday the 17th. We also decided to hold a fashion swop shop each day from 17.00 to 19.00hrs.
At the end of the workshop, we all went over to see the great space for the event: BITZ – the upcoming FabLab at Rosmini 7/9, Bolzano.
We thank all the participants for their great contribution, and are looking forward to share with you for further details on the schedule this week.
So keep coming back for more news on:
