Activating Disruptive Fashion Modes and Practices

A workshop for digital/analogue experiments for opening fashion design and imagining new business possibilities.

At this year’s Helsinki Design Week, MODE UNCUT is facilitating a workshop on 10th -11th of September. The focus is on developing and experimenting with designing clothing by hybridising the analogue and digital skills of experimenters, designers, digital makers and creative citizens. The workshop applies a unique ‘Open Matrix’ for re-conceptualizing the way we can think about clothing and fashion. Participants are supported in developing hybrid design concepts by playing  and experimenting with digital tools in the FabLabs available in Aalto FabLab and Kaupunkiverstas FabLab in Lasipalatsi- Digital machines include rapid prototypers, laser cutters, digital textile printers, vinyl cutters and analogue tools including sewing machines, knitting needles and various textiles, threads and so on. This experimentation, in mixed teams of experts and amateurs, aims to generate ideas and prototypes for new open fashion design concepts and open business models.

The Open MODE UNCUT Matrix is a tool for ideation. MODE UNCUT matrix3

Through new and experimental combinations of analogue and digital fabrication we can re-picture the mass-production system of clothing towards more open and collaborative modes of making and consuming clothing. These new fabrication tools, offer the possibility of unique design outputs, small scale and on demand production systems, as well as encouraging methods of open designing, sharing, collaborative making.

We are curious to see what we can create in our 2-day workshop. All the participants will vote on the best concept to support with a crowd-funding campaign and make it into a startup business!

What can you conceive when you hybridise? Look for inspiration here…
